Course Outline

Aim:

Relapse Prevention (stress inoculation) assists clients in the anticipation, preparation and rehearsal of confronting high risk situations. Designed as a community based treatment programme it aims to foster the client’s mastery of levels of dealing with the 8 key relapse determinants and to sustain a drug free lifestyle. The programme also explores key issues in relapse, such as abstinence versus control use, gender and age specific issues and extra-therapeutic factors.

Participants get opportunities to:

  • understand and deploy key assessment tools in profiling clients’ relapse risk hierarchy.
  • learn how to provide key interventions to assist clients who are newly drug free.
  • learn skills for fostering self-efficacy to sustain change in stabilised clients.
  • understand research findings into the nature of relapse and their relevance within treatment programmes.
  • learn how to use clear task-orientated homework programmes to accelerate clients’ learning processes.
