New courses for 2013. :: 06/02/2013
We have six new courses available on our 2013 programme of training:

Working with drug & alcohol using relationships

Two day course 7 & 8 March

Trainer - Jenny Cove

Substance misuse work generally focuses on the individual, and the processes that individuals need to go through to move to recovery. However, where people use substances with a significant other, be that a partner, sibling or other relative, patterns of substance use become integral to the relationship; this calls for more complex formulations around behavioiur chnage.

Using theoretical frameworks to understand drug using relationships, you will use tools to explore these with clients, and develop skills to deliver brief interventions to support couples thriugh a process of change.

Over the counter, under the net

One day course 10 October

Trainer - Rowan Miller

Drugs bought over-the-counter in chemists and via the internet are now commonplace. But what kind of a problem are they?

Explore the changing face of drug using culture, the commercialisation of medications, and the revolutionary impact of the internet and how it is policed. This course provides opportunities to identify the drugs available, how much we know about them, their effects and risks; and to consider how we can work effectively with people to reduce harm and support.

Management & leadership

Two day course 12 & 13 November

Trainers - Amy Shortridge & Karen Dumain

This two day course will explore the essential ingredients for effective managment and leadership. Day one explores the theory and practice, principles and disciplines of good management; day two focuses on managing people through refining particpants coaching skills.

Focused on developing yourself as a manager and leader; an interactive two days aiming to stimulate thinking and support practice for both new and established managers.

Contingency management

One day course 26 November

Trainer - Phil Harris

Understand the principles of contingency management to enhance engagement, retention and treatment outcomes. Based on the Premack Principle, the course will explore the application of contingent rewards for a wide range of client groups such as opiate users, stimulant users and alcohol users.  It will explain how to develop contingencies schedules for those in active treatment and how to maximise recovery outcomes with low cost and effective incentives.

Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA)

Two day course 3 & 4 December

Trainer - Phil Harris

A leading behavioural model to assist the most highly excluded clients. Based on a structured care planning and treatment co-ordination model, the CRA programme provides a wide range of interventions that address difficulties across the spectrum of clients' lives. Methamphetamine :: 19/11/2008
What's going on?

Well we just spent a few months trying to get the evidence about meth use in the UK.  It's an interesting process to go through and we feel confident enough to say that levels of use are still quite low here in the UK and that treatment and support for users would be broadly similar to that for users of other stimulant drugs.  However, because of the public health risk posed by people trying to make meth at home we do need to be alert to any signs of manufacture.

We just ran a really successful day for Safer Wolverhampton to plan local responses to meth use.  The day that brought together first responders, drug services, health providers and public services like national grid and the water board.
