Course overview:

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) training is a two-day interactive programme in suicide first aid, developed by LivingWorks Education.

ASIST provides an evidence based structure to recognise when someone may be thinking about suicide, start an open conversation, and develop a safety plan with the person to connect them to further support.

Using a collaborative and compassionate approach, ASIST develops participants confidence and skills to provide a suicide intervention.

Aim(s):

To develop understanding and skills to provide a suicide intervention and create a plan for immediate safety.

Objectives:

By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:

  • Talk openly about suicide and reflect on the ways personal experiences and societal attitudes can affect our views on suicide and our interventions
  • Learn about the ‘Pathway for Assisting Life’ suicide first-aid approach that can meet the needs of a person with thoughts of suicide and support their safety
  • Identify the key elements of an effective suicide safety plan and the actions required to implement it
  • Appreciate the contribution of being ASIST trained in improving and integrating suicide prevention and helping to create suicide safer communities
  • Recognise the importance of self-care when supporting someone with thoughts of suicide and the role of life-promotion and self-care in suicide prevention
