Course overview:

Improve your knowledge and understanding of specific challenges and risks for pregnant women using alcohol and other drugs and their unborn babies to inform a holistic assessment; and develop confidence in providing harm reduction interventions and planning for safety.

 

Aim(s):

To improve your knowledge and understanding of working with pregnant drug/alcohol users and to feel confident in providing harm reduction interventions alongside safety planning

 

Objectives:

By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:

  • Think about specific gender challenges for women with substance use
  • Be able to assess substance misuse during pregnancy and ask additional questions about the unborn baby e.g. have you seen a midwife?
  • Understand the different effects of drugs and alcohol on the unborn baby
  • Be able to articulate the risks to the unborn to the parent (s) and other professionals to inform a holistic risk assessment
  • Understand different medication options available to those who are pregnant e.g. methadone, buprenorphine, buvidal
  • Feel confident in providing harm reduction advice to those who are pregnant and their partners
  • Think about the complexity and risk if substance misuse is accompanied by other factors e.g. domestic abuse and perinatal mental health

Leanne Ellaway

Leanne Ellaway has been a registered social worker since qualifying from the University of Bristol in 2006. With almost two decades of experience across both voluntary and statutory sectors, she has worked in a range of roles including as a Practitioner, Senior Social Worker, Team Manager, Parental Substance Misuse Social Worker and Adult and Child Safeguarding Lead for drug and alcohol services in Bristol.

 

Throughout her career, she has developed extensive expertise in homelessness, mental health, substance misuse, domestic abuse, and safeguarding. She has significant experience of undertaking complex casework, completing specialist assessments, supervising staff, writing policies and procedures, providing safeguarding advice, delivering training, and working collaboratively with partner agencies to improve outcomes for individuals and families.

 

As a qualified Practice Supervisor and Practice Educator, Leanne is experienced in supporting, assessing, and mentoring student social workers throughout their professional development.

 

Now working as a freelance social worker and trainer, Leanne delivers engaging, evidence-based training on a range of specialist topics, including parenting and substance use, pregnancy and substance use, and non-fatal strangulation. She is also a qualified Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) and an accredited facilitator of the Freedom Programme.
