Understanding personality disorder in practice
Course overview:
Develop practical approaches to work effectively with people with personality disorder life difficulties.
Using key psychological theories and models, and drawing on the views of individuals experiencing personality disorder difficulties, the course explores the contested nature of this diagnostic category, the impact of stigma, responses to potential interpersonal challenges and the importance of staff self-awareness and self-care in practice.
Aim(s):
This one day training aims to provide support staff with psychologically informed understandings and practical strategies to work effectively and supportively with people with personality disorder life difficulties. The views of individuals experiencing personality disorder difficulties will be central.
Objectives:
By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:
- Clarify what is meant by ‘Personality Disorders’ with a specific focus on Borderline
- Personality Disorder, equivalent to Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder
- Think about how to challenge the stigma associated with the term ‘personality disorder’ using an empowering recovery orientated approach
- Gain information about development of the emotional brain and some key psychological theories and approaches that can be practically applied
- Consider how to understand and respond to common interpersonal challenges including: boundaries; attachment and endings; potential for ‘team splitting’ and ‘acting out’ emotions
- Recognise the importance of individual and service reflective practice and looking after self when supporting people with personality disorder difficulties

Suzanne Pearson
Suzanne Pearson is a BABCP Accredited CBT therapist and a Registered Mental Health Nurse. She also has a PGCE in Adult Education. Suzanne has extensive and ongoing experience of supporting individuals to develop their resilience and well-being, and in supporting those recovering from mental and emotional distress.
She has worked in the NHS and voluntary sector as a therapist, mental health practitioner and service manager. Currently she provides a low cost in-person and online CBT therapy service for adults. Suzanne has been a longstanding volunteer with a peer led self-help group for people who self-harm, and she has also volunteered for a national out of hours crisis service.
She continues to be involved with various local mental health related charities as an advisor. She is an experienced independent mental health and social care trainer including being a qualified instructor for the Mental Health First Aid (Adult and Youth) and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) courses.
